Before heading out to camp, make sure you aren’t committing one of our top 10 camping mistakes. Help ensure your trip goes smoothly by reviewing our list of common trip-ruiners.
1. Not creating a checklist
Don’t get to camp only to realize you forgot the tent or the beer. Make a checklist beforehand and check it twice before hitting the road toward adventure. See our family camping checklist so you don’t have to build your list from scratch.
2. Arriving too late
Plan to get to camp early! This is especially true if you’re heading somewhere without reservations. Plenty of first-come-first-serve sites are out there but you don’t want to miss out on the best of them by showing up once they’re picked over. Another reason to leave early is to ensure you are able to set up camp before the sun goes down. Wrangling the family and setting up your tent in the dark is a drag and can easily be avoided.
3. Bringing Untested Gear
Bringing new or borrowed gear? Make sure to test it out prior to the trip. New gear sometimes fails or you may not realize it’s dependent on other items (think batteries or fuel cartridges). You also don’t want to borrow a tent then realize it’s missing a pole. Test your gear at home to avoid a headache at camp.
4. Overpacking
Take the time to plan carefully what you bring. Write out a meal plan to avoid overpacking food. We also recommend repackaging food when appropriate. For example, depending on your group size and appetites you may not need to bring a bulk pack of hot dogs. Bring what you need and leave the rest in your freezer. Also be sure to check the forecast in advance so you can pack weather appropriate clothes rather than brining your entire wardrobe.
5. Brining the Wrong Food
Temperatures and the quality/capacity of your cooler will have a big impact on what food you should bring. If you bring a ton of items that need to stay cold, make sure you have cooler space and adequate ice to avoid it spoiling. (link to freezer and list)
6. Underestimating the Weather
Weather can change fast! Night temperatures in some region can also fall dramatically. Keep a close eye on forecast (both high and low temps) as you plan your clothing and gear. Also, always prepare for rain. Even if not forecasted, it’s best to be prepared for precipitation to avoid soaked gear and clothes.
7. Not Researching the Destination
Know before you go! Research the local area and campground itself to ensure you are aware of conditions and any regulations or required permits.
8. Forgetting Bug Repellent & Sunblock
Sunburn blisters and welted mosquitoes bites make for uncomfortable days and sleepless nights camping. Luckily these are easily avoided with proper planning. Make sure you bring along and use adequate sun block and insect repellent.
9. Bringing the Wrong Clothes
We recommend moisture wicking fabrics for your outdoor adventures. Also, think layers! This will allow plenty of customization if and when the weather turns or nighttime temperatures plummet.
10. Forgetting Drinks for the Evening and Coffee for the Mornings!
This one is obvious – don’t forget the coffee and beer! We recommend the Aeropress Go for great coffee at the campsite.
We hope this list helps you from falling victim to these common goofs the next time you head out for camping. Enjoy your adventures!
