5 Bucket List Day Hikes of the Pacific Northwest

How2Outdoor is based in the beautiful Pacific Northwest and what better way to pay homage to the beautiful area we call home than compile a list of the best day hikes around the PNW.  With options from steep and strenuous to short and sweet – something on our list is sure to satisfy every skill level.   

Before you head out on your adventure, check out our day hike checklist to make sure your gear is locked an loaded before hitting the trail.   

1. Colchuck Lake (Leavenworth, WA)

Colchuck Lake Leavenworth

Colchuck Lake is a picture-perfect alpine dream.  Located near the Bavarian village of Leavenworth, WA, Colchuck Lake serves as one of the two gateways to the Enchantments and is a sight to behold.  The trail is challenging – mostly up, up, up and away – but the view!  Shimmering blue waters against the dramatic backdrops of Dragontail Peak, the remnants of the Colchuck Glacier, and Colchuck Peak.  It’s truly one of those hikes you’ll never forget and will be ready to come back to as soon as you leave it. 

As an added bonus, nearby Leavenworth has a number pubs, restaurants, coffee shops, and bakeries where you can treat yourself after the hike. 

Distance: 8 miles, roundtrip
Elevation gain: 2,300 ft
Highest Point: 5,580 ft
State: WA 

Tip: This hike has become exceeding popular as pics of the lake have turned it into an Instagram darling.  Parking at the trailhead is limited, so it’s best to plan to arrive early. 

2. Wahclella Falls (Cascade Locks, OR)

If you’re short on time, or are unable physically to make longer hikes, Wahclella Falls near Cascade Locks, Oregon offers great reward for minimal effort.  The hike is short, mostly flat, and offers the sweet reward of one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge. 

Distance: 2.4, roundtrip 
Elevation Gain: 223 ft
Highest Point: 350 ft
State: OR 

3. Heather Lake (Granite Falls, WA)

With less distance and elevation gain than other options on our list, Heather Lake makes for a family-friendly hike with the payoff of crystal clear waters and beautiful peaks awaiting you at the end.  The hike is located in Washington State near the town of Granite Falls.  The lake sites on the northeastern slope of Mount Pilchuck.   

This is a great hike to pack a thermos of coffee and bag lunch to so you can enjoy at the lake. 

Distance: 4.6 miles, roundtrip 
Elevation Gain: 1,034 ft 
Highest Point: 2,430 ft 
State: WA 

Tip:  High clearance vehicle is recommended due to potholes leading to trailhead.  Trail can get busy, so plan to visit on a weekday or arrive early.   

4. Sawtooth Lake (Stanley, ID)

Sawtooth Lake trail is located near Stanely, ID and is one of the longer hikes on our list.  It’s a good option for either a long day hike or an overnight backpacking destination.  The Sawtooth Mountains are best known for their dramatic skyline and this hike will get you up close and personal with the most dramatic of their peaks along with majestic Sawtooth Lake. 

Distance: 10 miles, roundtrip 
Elevation Gain: 1,873 ft 
Highest Point: 8,525 ft
State: ID 

5. Trail of 10 Falls (Silverton, OR)

Trail of Ten Falls is a loop trail located near Silverton, Oregon.  As the name implies, there are ten falls on this 7.6 mile loop and most of them are simply gorgeous.  The loop and waterfalls are why many consider Silver Falls State Park the crown jewel of the Oregon State Parks system. 

Distance: 7.6 miles, roundtrip 
Elevation Gain: 1,300 ft 
Highest Point: 1,590 ft
State: OR
