Day Hike Checklist

Day hikes are a great way to get outdoors and explore nature without having to lug around the extra weight required for traditional backpacking.  However, no matter how short the trek there are essentials items you’ll want in your pack in case of emergency.

Before heading out, you’ll want to customize your packing list based on hike distance and elevation gain, weather, and terrain.  For example, if you’re going somewhere with hot weather and an intense elevation gain – you’ll want to pack more water and ensure you have sunblock.

Customization aside, below is our day hiking checklist you’ll want to run through before each trip out.

  • Hiking backpack
  • Weather-appropriate clothing w/ extra layer (think moisture-wicking and layers)
  • Hiking boots or shoes
  • Plenty of food
  • Plenty of water
  • Navigation tools such as a map and compass
  • First-aid kit
  • Knife or multi-tool
  • Sunblock
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Weatherproof matches
  • Emergency shelter
  • Trekking poles (optional)
  • Fully charged phone
  • Emergency whistle
  • The rest of the Ten Essentials as appropriate for your hike
